New to my RedBubble store is 'Badger in the Woods'. He's spotted fox down by the stone circle. I'm not sure if they're friends or not. Tawny owl is aware, awake in the day... perhaps something is about to happen.
Here are some details:
As a one off piece it means I can take my time over the art. I altered parts of the picture again and again until I felt pleased with the mage.
I started by sketching out the idea:
I was going to attempt to paint this straight onto the drawing conventionally, but I mucked it up! Luckily I had scanned the drawing first as a precaution, as I suspected it would be beyond my watercolour skills to pull this off on cartridge paper at such a small size. I had scanned the image at 600 dpi - the larger the better! So... in Photoshop I started to lay down a base layer of colour...
I felt that I had created a problem with the monoliths in the clearing. I made the badger smaller and the monoliths larger. But after a deal of fiddling I decided to push the stones out into the distance and add the fox...
Detail of the altered monoliths, with an added foxy:
This artwork is now available in my shop! You can have a poster, a print or a greeting card, even a mug! There are many gifts with this design go have a look!
I woke at six this morning. The sun felt hot through the window, the birds were shouting like crazies and so I thought I'd join in the fun. I tip-toed out leaving Iain to snore quietly to himself and made my way to the woods with my camera. Setting the camera to 'auto everything' I clicked and snapped happily like a fly-catchers bill. Here are just a couple from my bounteous batch. READ MORE ON HINTERLANDS
I came back from my walk and proceeded to delete all my Instagram accounts! She's gone mad! I hear you cry. Well, maybe, but I just can't keep up with all the online shenanigans! I have so many accounts on various platforms, it has got out of control, and I don't have the headroom to cope with it all! Now that I've abandoned the Insta ship, I can concentrate more on my own sites. It is very sad, I had made several lovely connections on the platform, but it was starting to take too much of a toll on my time. I'd ignored this blog and my photography website for a long time. From now on they are going to be my main places of self expression. I still advertise my products on Pinterest and run a couple of Tumblr blogs... I have a lot of online activities to keep me busy. If you are interested you can find all my links updated at petrabrown.co.uk, if on the other hand you are not interested, I really don't blame you... it's all too complicated- so many sites and platforms! Just make sure you subscribe to this blog by pressing the RSS feed thingy and all will be well. I intend to put all my creative online inputs here.
And so I'll finish this post with a Scooby-Doo, just because I can...
He's the first of my ‘Six Fan-Art Challenge’ set. As a kid I was ever hopeful that one episode the spooks would turn out to be real, but they always turned out to be some shady dude in a disguise. So I have made some real spooks for Scooby-Doo, Petra style.
I’ve been so busy I’ve only been able to get two done- Dr Who and Scooby Doo. Hopefully, once I’ve finished the project that I’m working on at the moment I can get the other four characters done. Apologies to the folks on Instagram who gave me a great list of characters to choose from... and sorry for upping and offing!
Last evening I went for a painful stumble through the woods behind our house. Painful, because for some strange reason my left knee has decided to act up. I have no memory of damaging it, but it seems to know something I don't. Anyway, I was stumbling along, tripping over bramble and ivy stems- the jokers of the woods, grunting, puffing and crying out 'Oo! Ow! Ooph! Ouch!' and various oaths which I'll spare you here, when I came across this lovely scene decorated with these fabulous ferns.
The Beech Fairies.
This is just part of a bigger picture that I’m working on for a poster for my RedBubble store. The finished picture will show the entire tree and it’s various inhabitants.
This is another project on hold. I have to finish up my work on the next Helen Foster James picture book for Sleeping Bear Press.
I really love doing this kind of work, taking my time over a piece. The British countryside and it’s folklore has always filled me with a feeling of magical intrigue. I could lose myself in an ancient woodland world full of talking owls and pixie tricks.
I’ll get back onto this soon, hopefully, life is just so full of things you have to do, I never seem to get enough time!
Hopefully.... to be continued!
